Special exhibitions, lectures and workshops take place regularly in the museum and the affiliated educational establishment. Schools in particular use the educational offer. The range of events and workshops covers the three main themes of history, democracy and the environment.
The museum counted over 60,000 visitors in 2019 with its various offers.
Mill tower
A mill already existed below the Teistungenburg monastery in the 17th century . When the border crossing was built, the mill buildings were demolished, only the mill tower remained. The tower was rebuilt and served as a command and control tower for direct monitoring of the border crossing point; the signal and control lines also converged here. Today there are exhibitions on several floors on in-depth topics such as the Green Belt or the border service in East and West.
Grenzlandweg
An approximately 6-kilometer circular route leads from the Grenzlandmuseum along the Lower Saxony-Thuringian border region. At 24 stations, some of the former border installations can be viewed in their original state, including a command tower of the GDR border troops , but also customs and Federal Border Guard installations . There are also insights into historical and natural history topics along the former border line.
Horse Mountain Headquarters
A BTv 4x4 observation tower (the base area is 4x4 m) was built as a guide on the southern foothills of the Pferdeberg. The command post was responsible for a nearly 17-kilometer-long border section that stretched from the road in the Hahletal to near Neuendorf. On the first floor there was space for an alarm group, which could also sleep here. The command post was on the top floor, where all signal systems and the border alarm network converged. A spotlight was installed on the roof with which the border area around the tower could be illuminated even at night. Next to the border tower was a parking space from which the alarm group could move to the corresponding border section as quickly as possible in the event of an alarm. A tour of the tower is possible by arrangement.
