Border eagle near Oberhof

The Grenzadler on the Rennsteig near Oberhof is a striking boundary stone on the boundary of Oberhof. At the time it was set up, it marked the state border between the Kingdom of Prussia ( Steinbach-Hallenberg section ) and the neighboring duchy of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha (Oberhof section).

The object designated as a land monument is a well-known example of the border eagle type .

As a result of the German War in 1866, the Schmalkalden district was annexed by Prussia and along the previously Kurhessian border, all border marker stones with the "Kurhessian lion" were replaced by stones with the royal Prussian eagle coat of arms. The boundary stone in question is a stone approx. 1.80 m high, the top of which is rounded off in accordance with regulations. A cast-iron metal plate with the Prussian coat of arms is embedded on the front side (facing the street).

Today there are numerous sports facilities in the vicinity of the boundary stone, including a. a biathlon stadium and the ski jumping facility in Kanzlersgrund . The border eagle is a well-known orientation and starting point for hikes.
