description

The border monument at Gompertshausen essentially represents a sub-area of the GDR border security. The former platoon leader command post 1 in border section 46 is next to the very good, largely original border tower and the underground control bunker with two car covers and remains of the border signal and safety fence as well as the electrical systems. The border tower was built in 1983, the construction of the command bunker should be dated to the 1960s. Until the political change in the GDR , in November 1989, the border tower was manned around the clock by GDR soldiers for the purpose of border security.

History of origin

After the fall of the GDR borders in 1989, the border tower and command bunker no longer had any military significance. In the following years it was used as a café or youth club . Since no further use for the former owner (municipality of Gompertshausen) could be identified, the demolition of the tower and bunker facility was planned for 2001. Shortly before the actual demolition and disposal work, the Elke, Andreas and Manuel Erhard families bought the entire system. After extensive renovation and refurbishment work by the Erhard family, the border tower with guide bunker was preserved in its original form in some areas and is now one of the few complex, listed border monuments along the former inner-German border . The initiators' concern is to divide Germany by means of original border monuments mediate to shape the unity of Germany. Since then, historical tours have been possible for groups. The sponsorship of the border monument near Gompertshausen lies with the German Board of Trustees for the Promotion of Science, Education and Culture eV
