The Grenzwaldbrücke is a structure on the federal highway 7 at km 587. It is located in the Rhön on the Hessian-Bavarian border between the Fulda triangle and the Bad Brückenau / Volkers junction . The bridge spans the valley of the Kleine Sinn and a country road that connects Speicherz and Oberzell . It consists of a common steel superstructure for both lanes with a total of four lanes and two hard shoulder.

In the course of the bridge, the highway route has a radius of 2000 m and a transverse gradient of 2.50%. The 935 m long and 30.5 m wide bridge has a maximum height of 96 m above the valley.

The girder bridge was built between 1964 and 1968 as part of the new construction of the federal motorway 7. At that time it was the largest road bridge in Bavaria. The construction costs amounted to around 22 million marks.

superstructure

The steel superstructure with a mass of 8600 t is a largely welded plate beam construction with two full-walled main girders and an orthotropic deck . It was erected in the cantilever with up to three auxiliary assembly supports in the middle field. The nine-span bridge has spans of 65 m - 100 m - 2 × 120 m - 125 m - 2 × 120 m - 100 m - 65 m. The main girders are spaced 20.2 m apart and have a web height of 4.0 m at the abutment and 5.8 m in the middle of the bridge. The transverse girders arranged perpendicular to this are spaced 2.5 m apart at a maximum height of 0.8 m, and every 20 m 2.5 m high lattice girders are arranged.

Foundation and substructure

The abutments and pillars are flat . The foundations of the 95 m high valley pillars are 2.75 m thick with a floor plan of 12.0 m × 14.0 m. The substructure consists among other things of eight pairs of pillars with rectangular, accessible hollow cross-sections made of reinforced concrete . At the pier head, the external dimensions of the high piers are 6.4 m in the transverse direction of the bridge and 4.0 m in the longitudinal direction. The dimensions of the shafts decrease with increasing height in a ratio of 1:80. The wall thickness is between 30 cm and 45 cm. The middle seven pairs of pillars are connected by head transoms 2.5 m wide and 5.0 m high.

Repair

Bridge soffit

In 2006, extensive repairs began on the Grenzwaldbrücke for 14.1 million euros. This includes the renewal of sealing, road surface caps, railings, bearings and road crossings . In addition, the steel superstructure is to be given a new corrosion protection and concrete renovation is to be carried out on all pillars, using mast climbing platforms .
