Greta Van Susteren (born June 11, 1954 in Appleton , Wisconsin ) is an American television presenter and journalist.

Life and work

Greta Van Susteren was born in Wisconsin in 1954, where she also spent her childhood. Her father Urban Van Susteren was a close friend and campaign strategist of Senator Joseph McCarthy , with whom he later broke up. While the father had Dutch, French, and German roots, her mother was of Irish descent. Van Susteren's sister Lise, a clinical psychologist based in Bethesda, Maryland, was best known for her candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for Maryland Senator in 2006.

Van Susteren studied at Georgetown University Law Center, which she left in 1979 with a law degree. She then worked as a lawyer and lecturer in Georgetown.

Van Susteren became known to the wider public in the early 1990s when she appeared regularly as a legal analyst on CNN during the OJ Simpson trial . Subsequently, she got a job as co-host of the show Burden of Proof and The Point , which she presented from 1994 to 2002. In 2002 Van Susteren moved to the conservative cable television station Fox News . There she presented the format On the Record w / Greta Van Susteren, which was broadcast five times a week until the end of 2015 . In terms of content, the program presented interviews with politicians and public figures on current political and social issues. Van Susteren, who was one of the most famous and popular presenters on the station, was, like other Fox presenters, often criticized for being overly close to the Republican Party and its representatives. She was criticized, for example, when she appeared in 2009 at so-called tea parties, mass protests organized by conservative groups against the policies of the Obama government, whereby, according to some critics, her role as a moderator was blurred in favor of a role as incitement to cheer up the crowds . After 14 years with FOX News, she left the station. According to speculation, the relationship between her and the owner Rupert Murdoch should have visibly cooled after the contract negotiations. She announced the end of her show and her decision to leave the station on September 6, 2016 on Facebook. In early 2017 it was announced that Greta Van Susteren would continue her career at MSNBC. Her new show "For the record" first aired on January 9, 2017 on MSNBC. But on June 29, 2017, she surprisingly announced that she had left the station again. It was later revealed that MSNBC had broken up with her.

Van Susteren is married to John P. Coale. Both belong to Scientology .
