Greuth (Italian Rutte , Slovenian Rute ) is a fraction of Tarvisio in Friuli-Venezia Giulia , in the Channel Valley .

history

The area was cleared around the middle of the 15th century by predominantly Bavarian colonists.

The inhabitants lived here from the yield of the soil, which they cultivated intensively. They mainly bred cattle and their well-fattened oxen pulled the heavy wooden plow from Tarvisio to Pontafel in the snowy winters around 1900, often with six or more pairs, to enable traffic on the “Pontebbana”.

The battles between Napoleon and the Austrians took place in this area, east of Tarvisio. The monument on the Kogel von Boscoverde (Grünwald) commemorates the fallen in the battles of 1797, 1809 and 1813 with the French all over Carinthia.

In 1965 there was the dam accident at the Rutte dam .

Districts

Oltreacqua-San Antonio (above water)

In Oltreacqua there is a small church donated by the Bishop of Schönborn and dedicated to Saint Anton.

Rutte Piccolo (Klein Greuth)

Although only a stone's throw from Tarvisio, the mountain farming village has remained completely untouched by the chaos of traffic and settlement in the valley.

Ortigara (Nesseltal)

The Nesseltal is a tranquil, green mountain valley, crossed by streams and lined with wooded heights. A few farmsteads are scattered over the fertile valley with the wide meadow slopes.

Boscoverde (Grünwald)

As early as 1872, the first railway connection with the Savetal and Laibach was established from Boscoverde (Grünwald). In 1877 the connection to Villach followed and in 1879 to Italy (Pontafel).

The Tarvisians built their main station across from Boscoverde. Around the year 2000 the old main train station of Tarvisio (Tarvisio Centrale), which was also the border station, was closed for traffic reasons, and the entire railway line was relocated to the other side of the valley in an enormous effort. In Boscoverde, a new, architecturally well-known train station was built. The Alpe-Adria motorway ( Autostrada A23 ) passes under the entire area in three tunnels and also has the entrance and exit of the city of Tarvisio.

Kanaltaler Kulturverein

The Kanaltaler Kulturverein, founded in 1979 and based in Boscoverde (Grünwald), strives to preserve Old Carinthian traditions and to maintain the German language (language courses, publication of books). The association has reintroduced the Kanaltaler costume.

The association also tries to keep the old name Kanaltal / Val Canale; the Italians wanted to replace it with "Tarvisiano".

In this context it should be mentioned that the coexistence of different ethnic groups in the Canal Valley has never led to major conflicts.
