Gray Villet

Charles Gray Villet (born August 16, 1927 in Beaufort West , South Africa , † February 2, 2000 in Shushan , New York ) was an American photojournalist of South African origin.

Life

Gray Villet was born in 1927 in Beaufort West, South Africa, the son of a doctor. When he was a little boy, his family moved to Cape Town , where Villet grew up. At his father's request, he began studying medicine at the University of Cape Town , with no success . After his sister's fiancé gave him a camera, he discovered his passion for photography . At the end of the 1940s he was able to convince his father to let him start training as a photographer in London . He dropped out of school early and initially worked as a wedding photographer before getting a job with the Bristol Evening News. He then worked for Reuters in London before returning to South Africa in the early 1950s to work for the star . In 1954 he moved to New York City , where he applied to LIFE magazine . Soon Villet was working regularly for the magazine and received several awards for his work. Already in 1956 he was just two years to work for LIFE from the National Press Photographers Association and the Encyclopaedia Britannica as Photographer of the Year Award.

Villet died on February 2, 2000.

His first marriage to the American journalist Chiquita Villet had a son and a daughter. In 1961 he met the journalist Barbara Villet on a job, who became his second wife. Barbara Villet manages his estate and has published several books about her husband's work.

In popular culture

In the film drama Loving by Jeff Nichols , devoted to the story of Richard and Mildred Loving apart sets, Villet is by actor Michael Shannon embodies.
