Greek oregano ( Origanum vulgare subsp. Hirtum , Greek Ελληνική ρίγανη ) is a subspecies of the plant species oregano ( Origanum vulgare ) in the family of Labiatae (Lamiaceae). This oregano subspecies is also called False Perennial Majoran, Greek Dost, Italian Dost and Pizza Oregano by Seidemann. It is a spice plant and closely related to Origanum vulgare subsp. virens , wild marjoram and Origanum vulgare subsp. viride , the false perennial major, related.
description
In contrast to other oregano species, the real Greek oregano blooms just like Cretan oregano ( Oregano samothrake ) white, not pink like the summer marjoram. You can already tell from the leaves, which are very hairy, that this species comes from a dry and hot climate. The hairs serve to protect against drying out and shade the leaf surface, making it appear slightly silvery-gray in color. It is very popular as a bee pasture.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.
distribution
The distribution area extends from Southeast Europe via Macedonia , Greece , Cyprus to Turkey .
Systematics
It was first described in 1822 under the name by Heinrich Friedrich Link in Enumeratio Plantarum Horti Regii Berolinensis Altera , 2, p. 114. Other synonyms for Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum (Link) A. Terracc. are: Origanum heracleoticum Benth. non L. nec WDJKoch nec Rchb. , Origanum smyrneaeum Sm. Non L.
Cultivation
The Greek oregano is one of the hardiest and can be propagated both by seeds and by dividing the perennials. 1 g of seeds corresponds to around 15,000 grains and is sufficient for around 7,000 plants. The minimum germination capacity should be 60% under standard conditions, the commercially available fresh seeds rarely have 75%, but mostly over 80-85% germination capacity. Sow outdoors from early April to May. Oregano is a dark germ and germinates at 23 ° C in 14 days. The cultivation period from sowing to the first harvest is around 7 weeks in summer. Cultivation in Mediterranean climates yields more aromatic harvests than in continental climates.
Oregano in the kitchen
The Greek oregano has the most intense and best smell and taste that is not lost even through cooking. Greek oregano is of the best quality in terms of essential oils, which are critical to taste. On a scale from 1 to 10 for intensity and taste, Greek oregano reaches 10, marjoram ( Origanum majorana ) a value of 3. It thus surpasses Syrian oregano ( Origanum maru ).
Oregano in medicine
In Greece, oregano is used to treat colds, to calm the stomach and to support general health
