The Grienenberg POW camp is a memorial in Kassebruch , a district of Hagen (Bremen) that dates back to a POW camp from the First World War . After the barracks were dismantled, the brick building from the time before the war was used as a branch of the Lüneburg prison until 1929.

The camp was located on today's Grienenberg road , which branches off west of the town of Kassebruch from the district road 51 of Hagen to the Hagen junction of the federal motorway 27 .

history

Today five Russian soldiers who perished in the camp in 1918/1919 rest in the war grave cemetery . The Kassebruch prison camp was established in Kassebruch-Grienenberg in late autumn 1914. As early as 1913, a building was used to house prisoners. It was supplemented by four barracks for 250 people each. In addition, a kitchen, storage rooms, a hospital and a barrack for guards were set up.

The prisoners also did cultivation work in Offenwarder and Sandstedter Moor . They also dug the Indiek Canal, which stretched from Uthleder Berg to the Weser in Indiek, a district of Loxstedt , and drained the Grienenbergsmoor and other wetlands. The necessary sand was brought in from Uthleder Berg in a truck. All work was done by hand.
