Grierson Island is an island up to 50 m high off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . In the group of the Balaena Islands , it is located 2 km west-southwest of Thompson Island .
Aerial photographs of the Balaena Islands were taken on February 2, 1947 as part of the US Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The island is named after John Grierson, commodore on the factory ship Balaena , from which the Budd and Knox coasts were mapped in 1947 .
