The Balaena Islands are a small group of rocky islands near the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . They are 16 km northeast of Cape Folger .
They were first mapped using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy during Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after the Balaena , a British factory ship from the Harland & Wolff shipyard with 15,715 gross tons , from which the Budd and Knox coasts were mapped in 1947 .
