Thompson Island is an island 800 m off the Budd coast of the East Antarctic Wilkesland . It is the largest and most northerly of the Balaena Islands and is located 24 km northeast of the Windmill Islands . The island consists of two rocky hills separated by a snowy saddle .

Aerial photographs of the US American Operation Highjump (1946–1947) from February 1947 were used in 1955 for mapping by the US cartographer Gardner Dean Blodgett (* 1925). A team from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) visited them on June 19, 1956 and named them. Name giver is the ministerial official Richard Thompson from the Australian Antarctic Division , who had led in a deputy position for several years supply trips within the framework of the ANARE to Heard Island , Macquarie Island and Mawson Station .
