Handle (thread size)
Handle was a simple but imprecise measure for yarn in Bohemia , Upper Austria, and Silesia . The measure was used to determine the fineness of yarn. For example, if the thread was two-piece, or two-handle , then it meant that two pieces , i.e. H. one or more strands that could be grasped with a man's hand. However, it was not specified whether short or long fingers were required for correct measurement and required a lot of experience from the yarn buyer.
A yarn sorting machine was therefore also developed to determine the handle . A single piece is placed in a closed, defined container and pressed together by a lever. A graduated scale on the lever mechanism shows how much volume is left (e.g. thread number 2 for two-thread thread), fine thread uses less volume than coarse thread.
Examples
Pieces on one handle / thread number | Weight in gran | English thread number (cotton thread) |
---|---|---|
4th | 690 | 27.5 |
6th | 450 | 42.1 |
8th | 385 | 50.6 |
10 | 315 | 16.2 |
12 | 260 | 73 |
14th | 264 | 81.1 |
16 | 216 | 87.9 |
18th | 170 | 111.6 |
20th | 150 | 126.5 |
22nd | 140 | 135.5 |
25th | 104 | 182.4 |
30th | 90 | 210.7 |
The weight refers to a string with 59 bundles of 19 threads (3 ½ Bohemian or 2 ⅔ Viennese ells reel circumference ), i.e. with a total length of 2989 Viennese ells. The dependency of the columns is not entirely conclusive.
Grades that were coarser than handle 1 were designated with the letters A to G (G is the coarsest yarn).
