Faster (unit)
Faster , even Strähn (s) or Strehn (s) or Schnalz was a counting measure in trade with yarn - strands .
When the yarn was wound onto the counting reel , also called weife , a regionally different number of so-called threads were tied or tied into a bundle , also known as a lower band (hence the name “bundle”). A certain number of bundles ultimately formed the finished strand of yarn. One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel, which in turn was also determined by the material of the yarn to be measured. The name Schneller is based on the fact that when the winding was finished, a hammer snapped against a bell to indicate that the winding was complete.
Austria
In Austria the piece measure was called Schnalz and applied to linen yarn .
- 1 thread = 2 ½ yards (Wiener)
- 1 Schnalz = 5 Wiedel / bundle = 1200 threads = 3000 Viennese yards = about 2330 meters
In Austrian and Bohemian factories, however , the following was also used for carded yarn :
- 1 thread = 2 Austrian yards = 1.554 meters
- 1 strand = 4 quarters = 20 or 22 or 24 folding = 880 or 968 or 1053 threads
Switzerland
In the canton of St. Gallen , the following applies to cotton yarn :
- 1 thread = 4 to 5 feet (Swiss)
- 1 faster / stretcher = 1000 thread
Germany
Bavaria
- 1 thread = 2 yards (Bayreuth) = 583 2/5 Parisian lines = 1.316 meters
- 1 bundle = 60 threads
- 1 faster / stretcher = 720 threads
In Bavaria had in trade
- 1 bush = 30 strands (Passauer)
Kingdom of Württemberg
The Kingdom of Wuerttemberg regulated by law the fast quantity.
- 1 thread = 2 yards (württemberg.)
- 1 bundle = 100 threads
- 1 Faster = 10 bundles = 1000 threads = 2000 cubits (Württemberg.) = 2103 cubits (Hanover)
and
- 1 thread = 1 ½ cubits
- 1 bundle = 100 threads
- half faster = 7 bundles = 700 threads = 1050 yards (württemberg.) = 1104 yards (hannoversche)
