Thread (thread size)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The thread , also known as white thread , was the smallest unit of an old length and piece measure for yarn in a strand .

When the yarn was wound onto the counting reel , also called weife , a regionally different number of so-called threads were tied or tied into a bundle one after the other (hence the name “bundle”). A certain number of bundles ultimately formed the finished strand of yarn. One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel, which in turn was also determined by the material of the yarn to be measured, i.e. cotton , wool , linen or hemp .

The values of a thread were, as was customary before the introduction of the decimal system, very different from region to region, they were measured in the usual lengths such as cubits , inches or feet and were the basis for trade.
