Fiddling
Zaspel , also number , is an old unit of measurement for yarn . It can be either a dependent part of a strand or a complete strand.
When the yarn was wound onto a counting reel , also known as a weife, a regionally different number of so-called threads were tied or tied into a bundle one after the other (hence the name “bundle”). A certain number of bundles ultimately formed the finished strand of yarn. One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel, which in turn was also determined by the material of the yarn to be measured, such as silk , cotton , linen , wool .
Prussian Silesia and Breslau
- 1 thread of linen yarn = 4 Silesian yards = 3.944 Hanoverian yards
- 1 bundle = 20 threads
- 1 zaspel = 20 bundles
- 1 strand = 3 braids = 60 bundles = 1200 threads
- 1 piece = 4 strands = 4800 threads = 18,931 Hanoverian cubits
- 1 shock = 60 pieces = 240 strands
Bohemia, Moravia and Austrian Silesia
- 1 thread of fine linen yarn = 3 Bohemian yards = 2.288 Vienna yards = 790 Parisian lines = 1.682 meters
- 1 thread of coarse yarn = 4 yards (Bohemian) = 3.05 Viennese yards = 1053 Parisian lines = 2.376 meters
- 1 bundle = 20 threads
- 1 zaspel = 20 bundles
- 1 strand = 3 braids = 60 bundles = 1200 threads
- 1 piece = 4 strand
- 1 almond = 6 strands
- 1 shock = 24 strands
Often the rope is fraudulently made from only 59 bundles, each of which consists of only 19 threads; the thread is often only 3.5 cubits long.
In several places you reel with three-ellbow thread as follows:
- 1 bundle = 20 threads
- 1 strand = 40 containers
- 1 piece = 6 strand
- 1 almond = 15 pieces
- 1 shock yarn = 4 almonds = 60 pieces
The following applies to Zwirn :
- 1 strand = 60 bundles = 1200 threads of two-wire yarn (coarse country twine)
- 1 strand = 720 threads of three-wire yarn (coarse country twine)
- 1 strand = 540 strands of four-wire yarn (coarse country twine)
and
- 1 strand = 2400 threads two-wire yarn (fine princely twine)
- 1 strand = 1440 threads of three-wire yarn (fine prince's twine)
- 1 strand = 1080 thread four-wire yarn (fine princely twine)
Kingdom of Saxony, Dresden, Leipzig
King Friedrich August II. Issued a mandate in 1834 to standardize yarn sizes.
- 1 thread of linen yarn = 4 Leipzig yards
- 1 bundle = 20 threads
- 1 strand = 2 braids = 40 bundles = 800 threads
- 1 piece of yarn = 6 strands = 12 braids = 240 bundles = 4800 threads = 19200 cubits
- 1 thread of wool and cotton yarn = 4 Leipzig yards
- 1 bundle = 20 threads
- 1 strand = 3 braids = 60 bundles = 1200 threads
- 1 piece of yarn = 4 strand
Grand Duchy of Hesse
- 1 thread = 3 hessian cubits = 72 inches = 1.8 meters, but sometimes 88, 90, 96, 97, 108 or 120 inches
- 1 bundle = 60 threads (also possible 26, 52 or 120 threads)
- 1 loop or number (strand) = 20 bundles (also possible 10 bundles) = 1200 threads
Fulda
- 1 weiffaden = 5 ½ cubits
- 1 bundle = 26 threads
- 1 zaspel = 20 bundles = 2860 cubits = 4863 Parisian feet
or
- 1 white (thread) linen yarn = 5 ¼ cubits (Fulda) = 1065 4/5 Parisian lines = 2.4 meters
- 1 bundle = 26 threads
- 1 braid = 500 threads
