Roof (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The roof was a thread measure for skeins in Emden ( Kingdom of Hanover ). It was a regional term.

When the yarn was wound onto the counting reel , a regionally different number of so-called threads was tied or tied to form a bundle - here also referred to as a reel clip - (hence the name "bundle"). A certain number of bundles ultimately formed the finished strand of yarn. One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel, which in turn was also determined by the material of the yarn to be measured. The thread was measured in the usual lengths, such as cubits , inches or feet, and was thus the basis for trade.

  • 1 thread = 1 ⅞ Emder cubits = 2 3/20 Hanoverian cubits = 2.1788 meters
  • 1 reel clip = 60 threads
  • 1 Roof = 5 reel knobs
  • 1 piece of untwisted wool = 4 Roof = 1200 threads
