Lopp (unit)
The Lopp , even Lop or loft , was a German Stückmaß for yarn - strands in the Duchy of Brunswick and the Kingdom of Hanover . The measure was one of the measures adapted to the metric system, confirmed for example in the Duchy of Braunschweig on March 30, 1837. A distinction was made there between Kauflopp and Werklopp .
When the yarn was wound onto the counting reel , a number of so-called threads that differed from region to region were tied or tied to form a bundle (hence the name “bundle”). A certain number of bundles finally formed the finished strand of yarn (Lopp). One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel, which in turn was also determined by the material of the yarn to be measured.
Braunschweig
- 1 cubit (brown-black) = 2 feet = 253 Parisian lines = 0.57072 meters
- 1 reel thread = 3 ¾ yards (brown-black) = 2.1402 meters
Kauflopp
- 1 bundle = 90 threads
- 1 purchase lot = 10 bundles = 900 reel threads = 3375 yards
Werklopp
- 1 bundle = 100 threads
- 1 Werklopp (house yarn) = 1000 bundles = 3750 cubits
- 1 bunch of yarn = 20 loops
An older name in this region for Lopp was Läpf.
Hanover
- 1 reel thread = 3 ¾ yards (hannov.) = 2.1907 meters
In the Kingdom of Hanover and at various locations, 1 bundle often only had 82–87 threads.
