Fitze (unit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fitze was a yarn measure in the Mark Brandenburg and in Pomerania , Stettin , Berlin and Prussia , which represented a regionally dependent subset of a strand , the so-called bundle .

When the yarn was wound onto the counting reel , a number of so-called threads, which differed from region to region, were tied or tied into a strand with a so-called strap (hence the name "bundle"). A certain number of strands eventually formed the finished strand of yarn. One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel, which in turn was also determined by the material of the yarn to be measured. Its values were measured in the usual length measures, such as cubits , inches or feet, and thus formed the basis for trade.
