Macque
The Macque , according to another source Marque also above, the volume was a French count and measure of length for wool - yarn and was in Sedan and Elbeuf . It represented a regionally dependent subset of a strand , the so-called bundle .
When the yarn was wound onto the counting reel , a regionally different number of so-called threads ( fil in French ) was tied or tied into a bundle or macque (hence the name "bundle"). A certain amount of macques finally formed the finished strand of yarn ( Écheveau in French ). One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel.
The numbering of the yarn according to the English system was based on the number of skeins per old mark weight in pounds, the livre de marc of 489.5 grams . For example, yarn number 8 meant eight strands per pound.
