The Griffon Nivernais is a French breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 6, Section 1.1, Standard No. 17 ).

Origin and history

Model for the reconstruction Rearing Griffon Nivernais the huge wolf hunters that famous "Gray Dog" Louis were probably the Saints (1214-1270), which came with the crusaders from the Balkans, those were the Canes Segusii ( Celtic Bracken ) related dogs , where Arabian greyhound blood also flowed. The actual Griffon Nivernais emerged after the French Revolution by crossing the Grand Griffon Vendéens into other existing hound breeds. Their purpose was also to hunt wolves, and later also to hunt hoofed game. In 1925, some hunters banded together to save the Griffon Nivernais from extinction. Two sizes were created, the smaller of which soon disappeared.

The modern Griffon Nivernais has a height at the withers of up to 55 to 60 cm, which is around 20 cm less than its model. His hair is long, shaggy, messy, quite strong in dark, always cloudy, which means that the fur tips are always darker than the fur base (sooty). The ears are pendulous, soft, rather thin, of medium width, quite hairy.

The Griffon Nivernais is a sometimes overzealous hunting dog , but works calmly and focused. In France he is highly valued as a wild boar hunter. He hunts in packs as well as alone.
