Grigor Areschyan
Grigor Areschjan ( Armenian Գրիգոր Արեշյան ; born May 13, 1949 in Yerevan ; † August 2, 2020 ibid) was an Armenian historian and archaeologist whose main interests were the history and civilizations of the Ancient Near East .
In 1987-1991 he was the deputy director of the Archaeological Institute of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. From 1991 to 1992 he was briefly Minister of State in the Armenian government.
In 2015, he and Boris Gasparyan led the excavations at Areni-1 , where he found the 5,500-year-old leather shoe.
In 2017, a commemorative publication was published in honor of Gregory Areshian under the title Bridging Times and Spaces: Papers in Ancient Near Eastern, Mediterranean and Armenian Studies .
Areshian died in Yerevan in 2020.
