Grigori Ivanovich Butakow ( Russian Григорий Иванович Бутаков ; born September 27 . Jul / 9. October  1820 greg. In Riga , † May 31 jul. / 12. June  1882 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian admiral .

Life

In 1836 Butakov successfully graduated from the Naval Cadet School and joined the Black Sea Fleet the following year, to which he was a member until 1860. During this period he participated in the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856 and commanded the frigate Vladimir . In the battle with the Ottoman steamer Pervaz-Bakhri , Butakov became a prisoner of war. From 1856 he received the position of commander of the Black Sea Fleet, three years later he was appointed governor of Nikolayev and Sevastopol. In the same year, 1860, he was given the command of the Baltic Fleet. For his work on new tactics with steamers Butakow was awarded the Demidow Prize in 1863. As part of the Russo-Turkish War , he commanded an armored squadron. His proposal from 1878 to expand the fleet on the Gulf of Finland in order to better protect the cities of Saint Petersburg and Kronstadt was accepted and put into practice. In 1881 he became a member of the State Council .
