The Grimm & Triepel Kruse-Kautabak GmbH was last Germany's only manufacturer of chewing tobacco . The seat was Witzenhausen - Unterrieden in the Werra-Meißner district in the northeast of Hesse .

history

In June 1849 the merchant Theodor Grimm opened a factory for tobacco products of all kinds in Nordhausen am Harz . The production included cigars and smoking tobacco as well as chewing and snuff tobacco . Shortly after it was founded, the company specialized in the production of chewing tobacco. In 1858, Adolf Triepel became a partner and co-sponsor of the chewing tobacco manufacturer.

In 1881 the owners sold their company to Otto Kruse as they had no heirs. Kruse and his sons expanded the company, which before the Second World War employed up to 1,800 people at its headquarters in Nordhausen and many branches. Grimm & Triepel was thus the largest chewing tobacco factory in Europe. Around 65 million packs of chewing tobacco in various forms were produced annually.

The Kruse family was expropriated after the Second World War and the company was nationalized. The family moved to Unterrieden an der Werra , where their company had a branch, and rebuilt their chewing tobacco factory here. In 1961, in addition to producing chewing tobacco, the company began producing plastic bottles, as sales of chewing tobacco declined after the war and a second mainstay was needed.

In the period that followed, sales of chewing tobacco collapsed almost completely and Grimm & Triepel took over many other chewing tobacco manufacturers and their product portfolios (Fischer & Herwig, Hanewacker from Nordhausen (1817–1975), Hansen, Nessinger, Schrimper, Wahrer Jakob). The German reunification temporarily brought the company new sales markets in East Germany, as the GDR's chewing tobacco production in Nordhausen was taken over by Reemtsma and closed. This left Grimm & Triepel as the only chewing tobacco manufacturer in Germany. Production was stopped at the beginning of December 2016 and the company was sold to Günter Hartmann Tabakvertrieb GmbH & Co. KG. The factory was expanded into a chewing tobacco museum.

Günter Hartmann Tabakvertrieb GmbH & Co. KG is now producing chewing tobacco again under the Grimm & Triepel brand.
