Grinda is an island in the Stockholm archipelago in the municipality of Värmdö . The island has been inhabited since the 16th century - initially by farmers. At the beginning of the 18th century it came into private ownership and was in the meantime also owned by the crown, but could be bought back by the farmers who lived there at the beginning of the 19th century.
In 1906 the first director of the Nobel Foundation, Henrik Santesson , bought the island and had a summer residence built there for himself and his family. The art nouveau yellow stone villa still stands on the island today and is used as a restaurant ( Grinda Wärdshus ). In 1944 the city of Stockholm bought the island and in 1998 it was taken over by the Schärenhof Foundation ( Skärgårdsstiftelse ). Today, in addition to a holiday home area, there is a youth hostel and two camping areas on the island.
With the shipping company Waxholmsbolaget , the island can be reached several times a day from Stockholm and Vaxholm .
