Grindaknívur

The grindaknívur ( Faroese , literally pilot whale - knife ) is a hunting knife to the Faroese the pilot whale hunt .

description

The Grindaknívur has a handle 12 to 15 centimeters long and a 18-20 centimeter long blade . In the practice of the Grindadráp in the Faroe Islands it has been shown that larger knives (and other weapons) are not only exhausting, but also torture the animals unnecessarily .

application

The Grindaknívur is used both to sever the spinal cord at the level of the cervical vertebrae in order to bring about a quick death of the whale, as well as to cut up the animal. The knife is by Tran particularly greasy, so that the hunter in dealing with the knife is also required. High-quality versions of the Grindaknívur therefore have recessed grips for the fingers to prevent slipping.
