One of the most famous brownies in Cologne is the Grinkenschmied . The name Grinken means the iron tires on the wooden wheels of the farmers' carts . The story of the Grinkenschmied was passed down by the local poet Franz-Peter Kürten.

According to this, a small and ugly, but strong and skilled blacksmith lived in a wood at Schönrather Hof in a cave on the Emberg (Emmerich) , who, on request and with the iron and steel scraps he had brought with him, carried out the work requested by the people overnight .

Every year the Grinkenschmied is symbolically brought to life at fair time and brought with a pageant through Höhenhaus to Wupperplatz, where the mentioned fair takes place. After the fair, the smith disappears in his cave "an dr sibbe Bäum" (Oderweg / Embergweg).
