Griosch is one at 1,812 meters above sea level . located Maiensässsiedlung in the Lower Engadine and after Vnà and Zuort is at the back of the Val Sinestra . The settlement can be reached from Vnà via a 5.5 km long path, which also has a post bus line in summer . Griosch is on the municipality of Valsot (until the end of 2012 Ramosch ).

Historical names

Griosch was called Greus or Grews in the High Middle Ages, and Griesch in the 14th century. In 1520 Grousch is documented and in 1688 Grieusch. The name may be etymologically related to the Rhaeto-Romanic words in the idiom Vallader "greiv" (= difficult) or "grava" (= scree slope; from the nearby river Aua da Chöglias ).

In the Manasser (adjective to Vnà) local dialect, the Maiensasses are called “plamarans” (and not “Prümarans” as in the written language Hoch-Vallader).

history

Originally, Griosch was settled from Samnaun . In 1588 the subjects of Griosch bought themselves free from Habsburg for 145 guilders . At that time, Griosch was still inhabited all year round. In 1799 Austrian troops marched through the settlement in the Second Coalition War . In 1817 an avalanche destroyed all buildings except for two stables. In 1933 a ruff fell in Griosch and caused great damage. In the avalanche winter of 1999, numerous buildings were damaged, so that the political community carried out a reassessment and as a result Griosch is no longer a construction zone up to the present time (as of 2012).

poetry

The local Jaccanin Riatsch-Vonmoos (1836–1903) published numerous poems about the settlement and its inhabitants. In his poems there is talk of eleven Maiensässen.
