from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The flu wave 2019/2020 affects the illnesses with the virus flu from autumn 2019 to spring 2020.

Situation in Germany

Vaccination is expressly recommended by the STIKO for certain groups of people . In addition to the count flu vaccination for people aged 60 and over and those with certain underlying conditions, the pneumococcal vaccine . The situation in Germany is being investigated and statistically evaluated by the Influenza Working Group (AGI) at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

In the National Reference Center (NRZ), in week 9, 2020, respiratory viruses were identified in 131 (62%) of 213 sentinel samples, including 32 samples with influenza A (H1N1) pdm09- , 32 samples with influenza A (H3N2) - and 18 samples with influenza B viruses .

From week 40, 2019 to week 17, 2020, 185,893 influenza cases confirmed by laboratory diagnostics were transmitted to the RKI within the framework of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG); 476 people had died from the flu. 85% of the deceased were over 60 years old, 50% were over 80 years old. To date, the wave has been less serious in Germany overall than the wave 2017/2018 with an estimated 25,100 deaths by the RKI; however, only 1674 of these were confirmed.

The following graph shows the Sentinel results for tested respiratory viruses. It was tested for influenza , respiratory syncytial , human metapneumonia , human parainfluenza, and rhinovirus . In some cases, SARS-CoV-2 was also tested (see note).

Remarks

  1. Positive rate = number of positive samples / number of samples sent. The proportion of the total positive samples can deviate from the sum of the positive samples of the individual viruses if multiple infections (e.g. with influenza and rhinoviruses) have been detected.
  2. Since week 8, 2020, sentinel samples have also been tested for SARS-CoV-2. For technical reasons, these values cannot be shown here. An alternative graphic can be found in COVID-19 pandemic in Germany # Comparison with influenza (flu) .

Situation in Austria

The Center for Virology at the Medical University of Vienna announced the start of the flu epidemic in Austria on January 15, 2020 .

Situation in Switzerland

The cases of illness in Switzerland are recorded by the Federal Office of Public Health . All characterized viruses of subtype A (H1N1) pdm09 and line B-Victoria were covered by the trivalent (triple) and quadrivalent (quadruple) vaccines of the season.
