Karlheinz Joura (* 1942 in Bohemia ) is a German pipe maker and former competitive athlete.

Career

Joura was born in Bohemia in 1942 . In 1946 his family fled from there and settled in Rostock , where he spent his childhood. As a young man he became a machinist and was a good athlete. 1961 Joura belonged to the GDR - Olympic squad of the diver . During this time, he and his teammate Klaus Konzorr spent four hours a day preparing for competitions and then working the rest of the day as a mechanic on the large ships in the Rostock port. In the meantime they forged their plan to flee to West Germany , which they put into practice in the fall of 1961. Joura and Konzorr hid on a foggy night in a Danish freighter that was anchored in the port of Rostock. They remained undiscovered and so they managed to escape to Kiel. When Joura arrived in West Germany, he settled in Bremen , where he had friends. He and Klaus Konzorr continued to practice diving successfully. They came very close to qualifying for the Olympics but didn't make it in the end.

Joura then gave up professional sport and became a qualified sports teacher. During this time he wrote some sports science articles.

In 1970 he began to smoke pipes and in 1974, as an autodidact, playfully made his first pipes for himself and his fellow teachers. He enjoyed this work so much that after a year his first pipe was offered to a German dealer. He gave up his previous profession as a qualified sports teacher within three years and since 1979 Joura has been working full-time as a pipe maker.

Today Joura is one of the best pipe makers in the world, whose pipes cost up to EUR 12,000. Joura lives in Bremen, is married and has three children. His son Fabian also makes freehand pipes in addition to his studies.
