history

At the place of an apparition of Mary with St. Joseph from 1590, a St. Anne's chapel was first founded in 1592, followed by a wooden church in 1594. In 1608, Bishop Maciej Pstrokoński brought the St. Bernard to Leżajsk to found the monastery. After another brick church in 1610, the current church was built by the Lublin masons under Court Marshal Łukasz Opaliński and his wife Anna in 1618–1628 . In 1657 it was partially destroyed by fire during an invasion of the Hungarian army by George II Rákóczi , and in 1670 some of the original mannerist vault decorations of the church were destroyed. In their place, paintings by Lviv fresco painters were created in the second half of the 18th century. In 1752 the canonical coronation of the image of Mary took place. The monastery complex was surrounded by fortifications in the 17th and 18th centuries, within which there are two courtyards. The monastery cemetery was laid out in the north in 1910. In 1928 the church was opened by Pope Pius XI. raised to the minor basilica. Between 1977 and 1983 the Leżajsk Calvary was founded in the monastery forest.

Building

The early baroque church was built as a three-aisled basilica , the masonry in the style of Lublin architecture was plastered. In the 18th century a porch was added and a two-story extension was built on the south side of the choir, which is now the rectory. The elongated choir with four bays was closed with a round apse. At its western end, two square chapels open to the side aisles: the north of St. Francis of Assisi, the south of Our Lady. The main nave is the same width and height as the choir. The church is 60 meters long, 26 meters wide and the tower 28 meters high. Below is a continuous crypt with 22 coffins, which is only partially accessible.

The baroque main altar was made in 1637 by Jan Grabiński from Leżajsk. This with rich sculptural and holzschnitzerischen details equipped altarpiece shows in the middle of the painting The Annunciation of the Virgin Mary , painted in 1650 by Franciszek Lekszycki, a Saint Bernard painter. On the sides there are four huge columns that support the crosshead with angel sculptures. Sculptures Francis of Assisi and Bernhard of Siena stand between the columns . The altar is crowned with columns and sculptures by Bonaventure and Louis of Toulouse . In the middle of the culmination there is a crucifix. Above is an interrupted bridgehead with sculptures of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and four angels.

The basilica has 19 side altars and significant choir stalls . The tabernacle dates from the Rococo and is said to have been made by Antoni Osiński in 1755. The four sculptures show, among others, Augustine of Hippo and Francis of Assisi. The mannerist pulpit from the 2nd quarter of the 17th century is richly decorated. Its parapet is divided by winding columns, between which there are sculptures of Christ and four evangelists in recesses. A canopy in the form of a papal tiara is supported by two winding columns. The most important is the organ with over 6000 pipes.
