Gritakumar E. Chitty

Gritakumar E. Chitty (born June 14, 1939 in Colombo ) is a Sri Lankan lawyer. From 1996 to 2001 he was the chief clerk of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea .

After studying law at the University of Ceylon , which he graduated in 1965, he passed the bar exam at the Sri Lanka Law College in 1967 and was admitted the following year. This was followed by work as a lawyer at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. In 1975 he entered the service of the United Nations and was responsible for dispute settlement in matters of the law of the sea until 1994 . In addition, he was commissioned in 1993/1994 to plan the inauguration ceremony of the International Criminal Court for the former Yugoslavia . He was also primarily responsible for setting up the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and acted as its chief director in the transition phase from August to October 1996.
