Grmožur ( Cyrillic Грможур ) is an island and castle ruins in Lake Skadar in Montenegro .
The fortress was built by the Turks , but a few years later it was conquered by the Montenegrins , who turned it into a prison . King Nikola I had political opponents - mainly non-swimmers - imprisoned here. This is why the island is also known by the locals as the Montenegrin Alkatraz .
The island is an important breeding site for native seabirds.
