Great rowing regatta in Bremen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Great Bremer Rowing Regatta is a rowing regatta that has been held annually on two days at the beginning of May on Werdersee in Bremen since 1879, with a few interruptions . It is organized by the rowers of the Bremen Sport Club with the support of the Bremen State Rowing Association.

The event is advertised as a mixed regatta and counts around 3,000 participants in 2,000 boats each time. This makes it the regatta with the highest number of participants in Germany.

Numbers and dates

Rowing clubs from all over Germany take part in the regatta. In 2007 numerous clubs from West, North and East Germany, Berlin , Hamburg and Bremen were represented. A total of 160 races took place in the 16 hours of competition, each starting four minutes apart. In the years 2010 to 2018, the number of participants and the races started, especially in the small boat segment, increased further, which is why the time interval between races was reduced to three minutes and the entire duration of the competition was increased to 9 to 10 hours a day without a break.

There are six tracks, each of which is 1,500 meters long and which are delimited by buoy chains. The regatta course is on the Werdersee between the Carl-Carstens-Bridge and the beach.

Around 100 helpers from the Bremen Sport Club and other Bremen rowing clubs organize the event on a voluntary basis, often alongside other activities in their clubs.
