The Great Mosque of Mopti

The Great Mosque of Mopti , also called the Mosque of Komoguel , was built between 1933 and 1935 in the Sudan style on the site of an earlier mosque in the Malian city of Mopti . It was created by masons from Djenné . in the early Islamic style of a courtyard mosque .

About 31 meters long and 17 meters wide, it is made of "Banco", the river clay of the Niger . It corresponds to a scaled-down replica of the famous Great Mosque of Djenné . The prayer room building covers an area of 530 square meters. This is designed as a transverse system and is in an eccentric position in the courtyard. The interior is divided by eight lengthways and four transversal aisles. The Mihrāb tower is 17 meters high, a side tower is slightly smaller at 13.5 meters. 2 ostrich eggs decorate the central cone at the end.

The mosque was in good condition in 1976 with only minor traces of erosion. A restoration carried out in 1978 led to repairs with cement. This did not get along with the traditional clay material, because cracks were created by penetrating water. In 2004, with funds from the Aga Khan Foundation , the mosque was again restored using river clay in the traditional style. In 2005 the mosque was added to the list of National Monuments of Mali.
