The  Große Lankesee  (also known as the  Große Lanke ) is a natural  lake  in the north of the state of  Brandenburg . With an area of 36 hectares, it is the largest lake in the Liebenberg district of the Löwenberger Land community ( Oberhavel district ). In terms of nature , the Großer Lankesee belongs to the Granseer Platte . On a peninsula protruding north into the lake is the Slavic castle wall Liebenberg from the Middle Ages . On the southern bank lies the Luisenhof residential area belonging to Liebenberg ; at the same time the federal highway 167 runs there .

The name of the water body is of Polish origin, cf. Lanke (toponym) .

In 1908, the Seehaus was built on the eastern bank as part of the Liebenberg Castle estate . From autumn 1943 to spring 1945, the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Cell Physiology, headed by Otto Warburg, was relocated there due to the war. Since the end of the 1940s, the lake house has been used as a recreation area by the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany . The surrounding Liebenberger Forest was declared a state hunting area in 1964 . Both uses ended with the turning point and peaceful revolution in the GDR in 1989/1990. Today the lake house is listed and used as a hotel.
