The large pond is a body of water in the center of the old town of Soest . It is also known locally as the "duck pond". As a source area, the pond belongs to the source horizon north of the Haarstrang and drains into the Soestbach .

history

The large pond was originally an intensive headwaters with numerous springs. The water escaping here was dammed up early on in such a way that a pond over a hundred meters long and up to sixty-five meters wide was created. Water also emerges outside the pond, for example directly to the east of the pond and further south in the “ Kolk ”. The damming of the water probably served to regulate the mill drive of the " pond mill ", which has been documented since the 13th century. The first mention of the name Großer Teich ("Grote Dyke") can be found in Nequambuch , written between 1315 and 1421.

The central location of the pond has led to the local tradition that this is where the nucleus of the city was to be found, but there is no evidence for this. In particular, according to tradition, the six original courtyards that were located around the pond should be seen as a subsequent historicization of the historical courtyard structure of the city. However, the spring lowland, to which the pond belongs, is to be seen as an additional safeguard for the Ottonian city fortifications, which it formed in the north and east. Today the " Theodor-Heuss -Park" is to the west of the pond . The pond is known for its panoramas; in particular the motif of the pond mill in front of the towers of the Wiesenkirche is widespread.

In addition to the special feature that the pond does not freeze over due to the intense spring activity, the yellow-painted " seesaw " on the southeast bank is particularly noteworthy, an ancient punishment device with which delinquents were tipped into the pond as punishment.
