The Old Schrae (pronounced Schrah that e is a strain e ) Name of the Old City book is a primary source for the city legal history of the city of Soest and therefore an important source for German municipal law at all.

In 1315 the city of Soest commissioned a painter to create the book of useless people . Everyone should be made aware of the drastic penalties they face if they fail to adhere to law and order.

The Schrae, begun around 1350, supplements the original Soest legal records of the old cowhide (from about 1226) and the new cowhide (after 1281), the latter two named after the original carrier of the record.

Another important legal source of the city of Soest is the city's famous book of eight and oaths, the Nequam book (Nequam = Latin for "no good", book between 1315 and 1421), in which misdeeds and their subsequent punishment are vividly illustrated, including those of today perhaps strange-looking seesaw penalty .

The first legal books from the Soest city archive including the Schrae were published in 1749/1755 by TGG Emminghaus, professor in Jena.
