Home to rare water birds |
The Große Weiher is located in the park east of the main entrance to Ambras Castle in the city of Innsbruck . The Habsburgs created the lake at that time to give a home to rare water birds.
The Aldranser Bach supplies the lake on the one hand with fresh water and on the other hand it also drains it. This means that the lake maintains a consistently good level II water quality . The park administration fenced its banks, as the lake was often used as a bathing lake forbidden in the past. The muddy bottom of the lake and the reed regions provide food and shelter for the birds.
