Großes Gieß is an extensive natural monument and geotope in the area of the Baden-Württemberg city of Neuffen in the Esslingen district .
Characteristics
The natural monument was designated by ordinance of July 15, 1997 under the name Großes Gieß in Gewann Pfaffenhalden . It is also protected as a geotope under the name of Bachbett und Bachriss der Steinach "Grosses Giess" S von Linsenhofen .
Location and description
The natural monument lies in the bed of the Steinach between Neuffen and Frickenhausen- Linsenhofen . The Steinach flows here through the layers of the lower Ludwigienton Formation (al2, formerly Braunjura β). Within this layer there is a sequence of hard sandstone with a high proportion of silt and clay (above) and soft clay marl (below). The border of these layers is cut in the approximately three meter high waterfall Großer Gieß.
