geography

course

The upper course of the Steinach on a map around 1600

The Steinach arises in the Neuffen valley spider at the foot of the Hohenneuffen and the Swabian Alb from the confluence of three source brooks, the most distant source is that of the Grendenbach (or Wendenbach? ) At approx. 495  m on the Winnender Berg southeast of Neuffen. The Steinach then runs steadily to the north, first through the Neuffener Tal with the towns of Neuffen, Linsenhofen - where the Beurener Bach flows from the right -, Frickenhausen - there the Krummbach flows from the left - and then itself flows into Nürtingen after 13.2 km, from calculated from the source mentioned, at a height of approx. 273  m from the right into the Neckar.

Catchment area

The Steinach has a 45.6 km² large catchment area, the uppermost part of the escarpment of the Middle Kuppenalb of the double bass in the northeast to the Jusiberg includes the west and so the natural area of the Swabian Alb is expected. Here is his at 745.2  m above sea level. NHN highest point around a ski jump above the source blade Bauernloch of the Dürrenbach. However, the waters only emerge below in the foreland of the central Swabian Alb , whose sub-area Neuffen-Vorberge extends as far as Frickenhausen and thus encompasses most of the catchment area. The Steinach then crosses the narrower strip of the Erms-Steinach-Albvorland sub -area and then changes in the southern Nürtingen to the Nürtinger-Esslinger Neckar valley of the Filder , where the river also flows. Nürtinger-Esslinger Neckar Valley

The catchment areas of the following neighboring rivers, all of which also run to the Neckar, border in turn:

  • on the Alb plateau on the other side of the arch from about the highest point to the spur of the Jusiberg, all competitors drain to the more important Erms , which reaches the common receiving water well upstream of the Steinach;
  • beyond the longest part of the adjoining left watershed in the deeper foreland, which runs approximately north to the mouth of the river, the Autmut drains the drain on the other side, last of all an insignificant stream in Nürtingen;
  • in Nürtingen the somewhat smaller Tiefenbach flows a little below the Steinach, it competes with its tributaries behind the right, north-eastern watershed up to the Albtrauf on the bass violin ;
  • the Alb plateau behind a piece of the southeastern catchment area border from the Bassgeige back to about the highest point drains to the "Lenninger" Lauter , another larger competitor further downstream to the Neckar.
