The Großer Moor lake is about 0.8 kilometers south of Hohenfelde in the Rostock district .
location
The lake area is surrounded by meadows and pastures in the area of the municipality of the same name. The lake has a north-south extension of about 150 meters and a west-east extension of about 220 meters. Directly to the south is a small pond, the eel crate , which is connected to the Great Moor by a 70 meter long ditch. There are several small ponds and water holes around the lake.
Formation of the lake
From 1815 peat was extracted for fuel in the area of today's lake . The peat pit was drained using a lifting pump. In 1873 the mass of the water exceeded the power of the pump, so that the mining area was flooded and today's lake was created. Peat mining continued in the edge areas of the lake until at least 1886.
