Großgarnstadt is a district of the municipality of Ebersdorf bei Coburg in Upper Franconia (Bavaria) and has around 670 inhabitants.

geography

The core of the cluster village lies in a hollow through which the Schneybach flows. It is characterized by curved streets where gable and eaves buildings alternate. Large courtyards with two-storey former residential stables and steep pitched roofs are typical.

history

The first documentary mention was in 1225 as "Garnstat major". However, there are archaeological studies that show that as early as around 800 BC In the younger urn field times there was a settlement on the parish hill. In the Protestant parish hall in Großgarnstadt you can see old town plans with a moated castle and a lake. In 1632 large parts of the village were burned down by the troops of Wallenstein during the Thirty Years' War . The reconstruction of the parish church lasted until the beginning of the 18th century.

In 1925 Großgarnstadt had 441 inhabitants, 440 of whom were Protestants, and 88 residential buildings. 1950 lived in the place 659 people. In 1962 the Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was consecrated.

On April 1, 1971, Großgarnstadt with 638 inhabitants was incorporated into Ebersdorf near Coburg.

Großgarnstadt has ten agricultural businesses (as of 2010: seven full-time and three part-time businesses). In addition, the place has 34 companies in industry and commerce and 14 companies in other areas.

Development of the place name

  • 1225: Garnstat major,
  • 1291: Garnstatt maius,
  • 1340: Grossengarnstatt

Name interpretation

  1. stat = home of the "yarn" = "Garo" = Garibert, Garibald, Garimer
  2. Goornstat = the place on the Goorn or Geern = Gehre / Winkel, since two ancient trade routes met between the big and the small town.
