Gros refers to an old unit of measurement, a measure for measuring quantities according to their number.

The large [ gʀɔs ] (from French large ; from Latin largeus ; rare, rather incorrect, also "large" or "large") is a dozen times a dozen, in decimal numbers 12 times 12 equals 144 units (pieces). It is also called "small bulk" or "big dozen". A “measure” is accordingly a dozen large, i.e. twelve times twelve times twelve (twelve to the power of three) equal to 1728 units. It is also referred to as "large large" or "large large".

The "great majority" has always been the majority of the wholesalers (distributors), while the "small majority" in the retail trade ( retail ) was used (and sometimes still is). Hence the commercial term taken from French for wholesale (as opposed to en détail - in detail ) for the purchase or sale of goods in large numbers.
