The Dortmund Wholesale Market is the wholesale market in Dortmund . The wholesalers and importers on the market specialize in perishable foods from all over the world. The focus is on fruit , vegetables and fish . The wholesale market supplies around 3.5 million end users.
The first Dortmund wholesale market, founded by the city in 1922, was located in the center of the city. The facilities were destroyed in a bombing raid during World War II. The current facility was built between 1951 and 1952 by the Hanebeck construction company on the site of the former Dortmund-Süd train station at Heiligen Weg 60 on an area of over 58,000 m². The halls were built in the style of a pavilion, the architecture of the 1950s can be seen today in the entrance building.
The basic technical principle is the spatial separation of goods deliveries by rail or truck on the rear and sales on the inside. In 1976 the 25 individual companies involved organized themselves into the Großmarkt Dortmund eG. This cooperative acquired the land and buildings for 2.5 million DM. In 1989/90 the buildings were completely renovated. The recycling of waste has been systematized by a recyclable material sorting facility.
The most important customers are 1,100 retailers and weekly market traders, hotels, restaurants, branch operations, hospitals and homes, but also snack bars and canteens. Fruit and vegetables to the value of around 250 million euros are handled, and the amount of goods is around 200,000 t per year.
The Großmarktschänke was and is a meeting place for market and retailers as well as night owls due to its nighttime opening times.
