Research history

A. Schonhovius Batavus mentioned a large stone grave near Rolde as early as 1547, which was known under the name "Duvels Kut". However, it is unclear which of the two graves he was referring to. In 1706, S. Hofstede and Kymmel carried out an excavation at grave D17. Among other things, they allegedly found a blue pot with gold-plated stripes. Before 1818 ceramic shards were found in a non-scientific excavation in grave D18. In 1878 it was documented by William Collings Lukis and Henry Dryden . In 1918 Albert Egges van Giffen documented the two systems for his atlas of the Dutch large stone graves. Restorations took place in 1873, 1931, 1936, 1954, 1965 and 1993. In 1936 and 1964 a search was made for possible stand holes in the surrounding stones, but this was unsuccessful. The facilities have been national monuments ( Rijksmonumenten ) since 1992 .

description

Grave D17

The complex is an east-southeast-west-northwest oriented passage grave . The burial chamber has a length of 13.9 m and a width of 3.8 m. It has seven wall stones on the northern and eight on the southern long side, another stone is in front of the south side. The narrow sides each have a capping stone. All eight capstones are still preserved, but only the easternmost one still rests on the wall stones. The remaining capstones are either only on one side or have fallen completely into the chamber. In the middle of the southern long side there is a corridor that consists of two wall stones.

Grave D18

Grave D18

D18 is also an east-southeast-west-northwest oriented passage grave. It's very similar to D17, but a little smaller. The burial chamber has a length of 12.6 m and a width of 3.5 m. It has seven pairs of wall stones on the long sides, one end stone each on the narrow sides and seven cap stones, all of which rest on the wall stones. In front of the fourth and fifth wall stones, seen from the west, there is a corridor that consists of two wall stones.
