The Kalkriese large stone grave (also known as the large stone grave Engter or Hoststeine ) is a grave complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near the Kalkriese district in the district of Osnabrück , Lower Saxony, which belongs to the municipality of Bramsche . It bears the Sprockhoff number 899.

location

The grave is located northeast of Engter, about 150 m north of the B 218 and is surrounded by a group of trees.

description

The grave was already badly damaged when it was taken by Johann Karl Wächter around 1840. In 1807 an excavation was apparently carried out, but no records exist. Ernst Sprockhoff was able to make out eight large stones and several rubble in 1926. He identified a capstone and four wall stones among them. A pile of hills could not be made out. In 1992, Schlüter and Zehm doubted whether the existing stones were actually a burial chamber. It is also possible that the remains of two destroyed large stone graves were collected here.

In 1991, eight boulders were found near the grave, which had been sunk in the ground and probably belonged to a destroyed, neighboring grave.
