The large housing estate Sandow in the Sandow district of Cottbus consists of the following residential buildings: Franz-Mehring-Straße 25–28, 40–44; Thomas-Müntzer-Strasse 1–4, 7–10; Am Doll 6 and 7; Willy-Brandt-Straße 25 and 26, Wehrpromenade 4–6. The economic upswing after the Second World War and the resulting steadily growing population in Cottbus led to a housing shortage. To counteract this, several residential complexes have been built in the various districts of Cottbus, including one in the Cottbus district of Sandow.

History and description

Weir promenade 4–6

The residential district in Sandow-Mitte was built in 1955/56 in the large-scale construction. They are three-storey apartment blocks, only the number of house entrances varies. Several streets and blocks belong to the complex. All blocks of flats are under monument protection and are an example of the construction work after the Second World War. All rental and commercial buildings were completely renovated between 2005 and 2011. The exterior facades were renewed and the interior completely modernized.

They are light gray apartment buildings with a base in a darker color. The first floor is structured by plaster strips, while the other floors are simply plastered. The windows are evenly arranged, but vary in shape and size, and the frame was kept in a simple architectural style. Every entrance has at least one French window with a grille in front of it, mostly above the house entrances. The house entrances are variably built into the front and rear facades, all balconies are equipped with side protection and are located on the opposite side of the street. Some house entrances are illuminated by a wrought iron lantern. There are also simple French windows on the gable ends. The floor plan of some residential buildings was also changed during the renovation. The windows were replaced, house entrances redesigned, electrical lines and water and sewage pipes renewed and full insulation installed inside. The extensive renovation and modernization has increased the quality of living in this residential complex.

However, there are hardly any noticeable differences between the individual apartment blocks. In the house Am Doll 6–7 , the slightly protruding entrance areas are decorated with simple stucco, the entrance doors are glazed and protected by filigree grilles. The house at Franz-Mehring-Straße 25–28 is empty. The reconstruction and modernization will not take place until the first quarter of 2012. There will be 7 barrier-free apartments on the ground floor, senior citizens' apartments on the upper floors. On the street facade next to each house entrance there are French windows, otherwise they are kept simple. The plaster structure on the ground floor and the simple plaster on the upper floors are still recognizable. The roof still has bat dormers , it is uncertain whether they will be preserved in this way. The apartment blocks as well as Franz-Mehring-Straße 40–41 and 42–45 as well as Thomas-Müntzer-Straße 1–4 and 7–10 are arranged in a square and have a green inner courtyard. In their construction they are similar to the other houses in this residential complex. The rental and apartment block at Willy-Brandt-Straße 25-26 is the only block with a raised basement. Here too, the glass entrance doors are protected by filigree wrought iron grilles. At the end of May 2005, the property management of GWC-Ost also moved into this block with a handicapped-accessible elevator on the rear facade. The Wehrpromenade 4–6 is initially the most recently renovated apartment block. Some apartments have windows in the kitchen and bathroom.
