The Grotte de la Salpêtrière is a cave northwest of Remoulins in the Gard department in France . It is located 200 meters below the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard , on the right bank of the Gardon , about 50 meters east of the municipality boundary with Vers-Pont-du-Gard .

The Grotte de la Salpêtrière was used from the Middle Paleolithic ( Moustérien , Gravettien , Solutréen and Magdalénien ) to the Neolithic and Chalcolithic . In addition to the Baume d'Oullins, it shows the most important stratigraphy of the upper Paleolithic of the Rhone Valley .

The numerous excavations that have taken place since 1872 have exhaustively captured the cave.

The cave, which is not open to visitors, has been classified as a Monument historique since 1912 .
