The Doubs at Goumois

The Grotte du Bief Paroux is a water-bearing horizontal cave in the limestone layers of the Malm on the French-Swiss border in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . It is located near the village of Goumois on the French side of the Doubs .

The hydrogeological conditions, i.e. H. the unpredictable changes in water levels almost led to tragedy in 2001. We strongly advise against visiting the cave by tourists who are unfamiliar with the cave or in bad or unsafe weather. Special equipment is required ( wetsuit, etc.).

Cave rescue from 2001

In May 2001, seven students from the Zurich University of Social Work and their 32-year-old cave guide were caught by the flood and trapped. “Despite warnings from a local landlord in view of the critical weather situation and accompanied by just a very young« experiential education »cave researcher,” the students got on. Thanks to a large-scale deployment of fire brigades, police and specialists (divers, doctors, etc.), which exceeded that of 1986 in the nearby cave of Theusseret , those trapped were free again after around 72 hours. More than 200 special forces took part in the rescue operation at times. The costs are estimated at over CHF 300,000.
